What’s the Difference between Single Hung vs. Double Hung Windows?
A single hung window is a type of double-hung window that has one sash at each end, and it can be opened from either side. A double-hung window has two sets of sashes on opposite sides of the frame; they are connected by hinges so you can open them both simultaneously or separately.
Air Circulation & Window Ventilation
The amount of airflow from between these two windows is different, as Double Hung Windows offer maximum circulation because there’s no gap in between the bottom sash and top sash. This allows for more airflow than with single hung windows which have an opening between the bottom and top sashes.
Single & Double Hung Window Types:
Single Hung – The most common style of window used today. It consists of only 1 set of sashes hinged together to allow access through the entire width of the window. There are three types of Single Hung Windows: Awning, Casement, and Sliding Sash. Each one offers its own benefits and drawbacks so be sure to find the one that is right for your project.
Double Hung – Two separate sashes are mounted on a track system allowing them to slide up and down independently.
Triple Glazed – Three panes of glass separated by layers of low emissivity film. Triple glazing reduces heat gain and loss significantly compared to standard dual pane windows.
Quadruple Glazed – Four panes of glass separated into four individual units.
Maintaining & Cleaning Single & Double Hung Windows
It takes less time to clean your single-hung windows because all you need to do is remove the lower sash and wipe off any dirt accumulated inside the window itself.
However, cleaning double-hung windows requires removing both sashes. With that said, Double Hung Windows also require little maintenance than their counterparts because they don’t have to be cleaned as often. The only time you need to clean them is when there’s dirt or debris stuck inside the frame. This happens more frequently with single hung windows since they require cleaning every few months.
